Root Canals

Root canals, also known as endodontic treatment, become necessary when the pulp (the soft tissue inside the tooth and nerve) becomes inflamed or infected as a result of deep decay, trauma, or cracks in the tooth.

If the pulp inflammation or infection is left untreated, it can become extremely painful and lead to an abscess, a pocket of infection under the tooth. Often, you will be prescribed antibiotics, which will help but will not eliminate the infection. The only thing that will cure it is a root canal or extraction.

Endodontic treatment will allow you to keep your own teeth, and with proper care endodontically treated teeth will last a lifetime.

The good news about root canals is that treating the tooth is NOT painful, but actually eliminates the pain when the damaged tissue and nerve is removed. Dr. Kava has invested in the best treatment modalities available. With the WaveOne Gold™ system, he can complete your root canal quickly and effectively in one treatment.

When you undergo a root canal, Dr. Kava will use WaveOne Gold to remove the infected pulp and nerve. The tooth will then be debrided and disinfected. The doctor will then fill the canal with a material called “gutta-percha.” He will seal it and restore it with a dental restoration of a crown or filling.

The advantages of a root canal are that you have saved your tooth and will not have to deal with bridges and partials.
